Alexander and his brother, Frank joined the Confederate Army. Alexander was a prisoner of war at Vicksburg. He spent about a year as a prisoner at Alton and Gratiot Street prisons.

October 19, 1863 Alexander was released from prison after taking the Oath of Alligiance and giving bond in the sum of $1,000. He worked as a station agent with the Chicago & Alton RR.
He died from Cholera.
Alexander is 1 of 3 Confederate veterans buried in Bunker Hill Cemetery.
