Mary Beth's twin brother was Gen William Frazer Tompkins who retired as a General in 1946 after serving in Pershing's Mexico campaign, then as a Captain in the Corps of Engineers in France during World War I.
During World War II,he served at the Army War College in Washington,DC and in the Far Eastern Theater.
In 1947 he became the comptroller for the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, serving until 1962.
