The Rochester City Police are investigating the death of a middle-aged woman found about 7:10 a.m. Today in a stairwell between Sally's tavern, 128 E. Eighth St. and the Fulton County Prosecutor's office.
Police chief Greg Halfast declined to reveal the woman's identity, or comment on whether her death was of suspicious nature.
She was pronounced dead at the scene by Fulton County Coroner Jon Good. At the Sentinel press time, Good had not yet made a ruling on the cause of death. Relatives had not been notified of her death.
The woman was found by a tenant of an apartment above the tavern. Nobody lives in the apartments above the prosecutor's office. The stairwell opens to the sidewalk on Eighth Street.
Incoming Fulton County Sheriff Roy Calvert, a city police investigator, is investigating the death.

Tami Lou SLAYBAUGH, 35, 326 W. Fourth St., died 4 a.m. Tuesday at 128-1/2 E. Eighth St.
Born in Rochester to Joseph G. and Alice Mae NETTE SLAYBAUGH, she lived most of her life in Rochester.
Survivors include one daughter, Jasmine Nichole THOLL, Rochester; one son, Joshua James SLAYBAUGH, Rochester; her mother, Alice Mae SLAYBAUGH, Mentone; two sisters, Sherry Lynn SLAYBAUGH, Macy and Sue Kay STANDIFORD, Rising Sun; five brothers, John F. and wife Barbara SLAYBAUGH, Etna Green, Donald L. and wife Alice R. SLAYBAUGH, Rochester, Ronald W. SLAYBAUGH, Florida, Richard Lee and wife Nellie SLAYBAUGH, Mentone, and Edwin E. SLAYBAUGH, Fowler; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service is at 10 a.m. Thursday at Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery with Rev. Lowell BURRIS officiating. No visitation is scheduled. Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester is in charge of arrangements.

Tami L. (Slaybaugh) Hopkins
Authorities have concluded that Tami L. (Slaybaugh) Hopkins, 35, of 326 W. Fourth St., died accidentally early Tuesday in the stairwell leading to an apartment above Salty's Tavern, 128 E. Eighth St.
Fulton County Coroner Jon Good concluded she fell while descending the steps, and became wedged with a twisted neck between them and the door.
No autopsy is being conducted.Good said Hopkins' blood alcohol level indicated intoxication. She died about 4 a.m.
Police were called at 7:19 a.m. Tuesday by the resident of the apartment above Salty's, who found Hopkins on the way to work.
