Rose Horihan Bell, 93, of Lanesboro, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester.
Rose was born Sept. 30, 1915, to Charles F. and Jennie Horihan, on a farm north of Lanesboro. She graduated from Lanesboro High School in 1932, received her B.A. degree from the College of St. Teresa in Winona in 1938 and a Master's from Mankato State University in 1961. She taught English in Minneota and Plainview until her marriage on June 19, 1940, to Theodore Andrew Bell in Lanesboro. Ted died Jan. 4, 1989.
Rose taught English at Lanesboro High School from 1955 until 1979. She had been active in the Lanesboro Public Library, serving on the Board from 1940 to 1991, and Board Chairman from 1980 to 1984. Rose was a charter member of the Community Chest in 1958 and chairman from 1979 to 1983, as well as a charter member of the Mardi Club and President the club's first two years. For many years, Rose was the financial reporter for St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
She is survived by her children, T. Gregory (Pam) of Madison, Wis., Daniel (Dorothy) of Rochester, Katharine (Gordon) Redmond of Pueblo, Colo., Brian (Kathy) of Naperville, Ill., and Mary (Rick) Neuman of New Hope, Minn. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Mary Pat Hassett, Mike and Jon Bell, Elissa Bayraktar, Davin and Alex Bell, Andrea Bushaw, Ingrid Strauss, Erica Woodworth, Patrick and Meghan Bell, and Mike, Tim and Brian Neuman; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and one sister-in-law, Marjorie Horihan. Rose was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Jennie Rafferty Horihan; one brother, William Horihan; and five sisters, Margaret Connelly, Mary Lynch, Ruth Galligan, Eleanor Granger and Charlotte Horihan.
Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lanesboro, with a Prayer service at 5:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow.
Memorials are suggested to Seasons Hospice, the Rose H Bell Buy-a-Book Fund, or St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
