------------
Louisa JOHNS

Louisa Johns was born 23 January 1852 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her father, Samuel Harris Johns, was in the English army and stationed there. He served in the army ten years. After he got out of the army he decided to come to America, circa 1855. He settled in Chessprings, Pa. to New Haven, Conn. to Iowa then to Mi. In 1863 he secured employment in the Stockbridge Mill in Singapore, Mi.

I first found Louisa in the 1860 Conn. New Haven Co. Naugatuck Twp. Census. She was eight years old

She married Edward James Bryan Sr. 4 July 1869 in Singapore, Mi. She was seventeen years old. Her father S. H. Johns and brother Samuel J. Johns were listed as wittnesses according to the marriage application found in Allegan Co., however the marriage license lists Marion and Samuel Johns as witness to the marriage.

The newly weds are next found in the 1870 mi. Allegan Co. Dorr Twp. Census. Edward's occupation is "sawyer". Their first son, Edward James Bryan Jr., was born in 1872 at the home of her parents in Singapore, Mi. (This was the custom at the time because the mother would often help in the birth of the baby). In fact her first three children are listed as being born in Singapore, Mi.

For the rest of the story go to Edward Bryan's Bio. Thanks

After the death of her husband in 1911 she stays in the cabin with her sons living nearby. She dies 26 July 1926 and is buried in Fennville Cemetery next to her husband Edward Bryan.

Proof:
1. "Early Memories of Saugatuck" by May F. Heath
2. U.S. Census
3. Marriage record on file in Allegan Co. courthouse
4. Edward Bryan's Civil War record contained a copy of marriage license & a list of his children with their B.D.
5. Death record in Allegan Co. courthouse
6. Obit. Notice in Fenn.& Saug. Newspapers
7. Fennville, Mi cemetery record
