He was born April 23, 1923, in Lorain, and was a Lorain resident since 1958.

He graduated from Clearview High School in 1941 and served in the U.S. Merchant Marine from 1944 to 1946.

Bemis was employed at General Motors' Fisher Body plant in Elyria for 30 years, retiring in 1976 as chief engineer of the powerhouse. He had been the first hourly employee at the plant.

He was a Mason and a 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry member.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Edna L. (nee Atkinson); son, Roger Bemis of Avon; daughters Lori Barnicle of South Carolina, Diana Watson of Lorain and Beverly Ritter of Elyria; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Lena (nee Scott) Bemis; brother, Oliver Bemis; and sister, Margaret Thompson.

Friends may call Saturday, 2 to 4 p.m. and from 5 p.m. until time of service at 7 p.m., at Reichlin-Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain, on Tuesday with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1079, will be private.
