He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Sgt Lockett MC was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was on a foot patrol in the Gereshk district, central Helmand province.

Aged 29, Sgt Lockett MC was from Monifieth, Angus, Scotland. He joined the army in 1996 and served in Bosnia and Northern Ireland, and in 2009 returned to Afghanistan for his third tour. He spent the majority of his career as a machine gunner but also held many other qualifications including Jungle Warfare Instructor and Military Tracking Instructor.

At Garmsir in September 2007, as Platoon Sergeant in A (Grenadier) Company, he displayed selfless commitment and unshakable bravery fighting and leading his platoon to rescue wounded comrades trapped in a Taliban ambush. For his actions that night he received one of the United Kingdom's highest awards for gallantry, the Military Cross.

Sgt Lockett MC was described as a consummate professional soldier and an inspirational leader. He was remembered for his infectious laugh and devotion to his family.

He leaves behind his children from a former marriage, Conor, Chloe and Courtney along with their mother Natalie, his partner Belinda English, parents Mel and April, and other family and friends.

The funeral, with full military honours was held October 15, 2009 at Cathcart Old Parish Church, Glasgow.

In a private ceremony following the funeral, Sgt Lockett's family were presented with the Defence Medal for Those Killed in Service on behalf of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.
Sgt Lockett MC was awarded the medal as he was operating in the Danish army's area of responsibility in Afghanistan when he was killed.
