Harlan Harold Smith, 66, died Saturday, September 19, 2009 from a farming accident in Arco.
He was born May 6, 1943 in Twin Falls, Idaho to Harold Eugene and Hilda Pearson Smith. Harlan was raised in Darlington where he attended grade school in Moore and High School in Arco. He went to college at Idaho State University and helped with the cattle and farming when he was home.
Harlan and Donna were blessed with three children, Douglas Harlan, Gail Ann and Dennis Frank Smith. They lived in Darlington where he farmed with his father. In Arco, where he worked as a mechanic for Jerry Johnston, and in Idaho Falls and Rigby while he worked as a mechanic for Tractor Sales.
He moved back to Darlington and farmed until he and Patty moved to Arco where he lived until his death. He worked with Leon Coon hauling hay and at Wells Fargo Bank.
Harlan loved fishing, tinkering and fixing up old trucks and tractors. He also enjoyed going to new places when he felt good enough to go and visit. He was a great Dad to his kids, a wonderful husband, son, brother, grandpa and friend to many. He will be greatly missed not only at home and by his friends but at the coffee table too.
Surviving is his wife, Patty Smith, his daughter Gail Turner (Jeff), his mother, Hilda Smith, daughter-in-law, Kelly Smith, step-sons, Brad Griffin, Jim and Jerry Cates, brother Harold Smith Jr. (Jo Ellen), sisters, Sheila Roberts (Lyle), Naoma Bitton, Paula Davies (Gene), Trilby McAffee, Janet Rowe (Jimmy), and his grandchildren, Megan and Kayla Smith and Kristen, Scott and Ben Turner, Jamie, Jeremy and Julia Cates. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Smith Sr., his sons Doug and Dennis Smith and his sister Hala Parsons.
