Nebraska Signal 10-3-1912:
The Late Oliver C. Wells
Born in Jefferson County, Indiana, July 22, 1839, died at his home in Bruning, September 26, 1912, aged 73 years, 2 months and 4 days.
While still a boy, his family removed to Rock Island County, Illinois. Here he cast his first presidential vote for Abraham Lincoln, in 1860.
Responding to his country's call, he enlisted in Company H, Forty-fifth Illinois Volunteer Infantry in the fall of 1861. He, with his regiment participated in the battle of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Holly Springs, Black River, the Siege of Vicksburg, the Meridian Raid, the battles before Atlanta, Sherman's march to the sea and the march through the Carolinas. He was present at the surrender of General Lee and the grand review at Washington. He was honorably discharged at Louisville and returned to his home at Rock Island, Ill., with a war record of which he might justly be proud, for he was a brave soldier, always found at his post of duty, valiantly fighting for the old flag and the cause it represented.
Soon after the close of the war, he married Miss Margaret Little. To this union were born four children: Mrs. J. Oldham, Mrs. S. Edwards, William J. Wells and Ernest E. Wells, all of whom survive him.
In February, 1879, he with his family removed to Fillmore County, where he resided till unable to longer perform farm labor, when he removed to Bruning, where he resided till his death. He was a kind husband, a loving father, an ardent patriot and soldier and an honorable Christian gentleman.
The funeral took place at Bruning. John W. Andrew, J. L. Fussel, C. S. Allen and W. P. Laing of Wilson Post of Geneva attended the funeral. The deceased was a member of Wilson Post.
