Samuel Hoke McCall, born September 12, 1851, married Martha Evelyn Muse December 23, 1872- their children: Carrie Elizabeth (born Oct. 10, 1873- died Sept. 11, 1874), Josiah Franklin, Emma Celestia, Livingston Kasuth & Etta Jane (twins), Mary Julia, Nannie Eugenia & Lula Belle (twins; born Oct. 29, 1879- Nannie died Sept. 5, 1880), Ida Leona, Annis Matilda, Susan Catherine, a set of twins (born about June 1886, died in infancy), Samuel Irwin, Matthew Alexander, & Olive Mae.

Hoke & Martha lived in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC when they were first married. Later, they moved to the Poplar Tent community in Concord, Cabarrus County, NC when they remarried & lived until he retired due to ill health. They then moved back to Charlotte. He died November 15, 1919 & is buried at Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church in Mecklenburg County, NC.

Samuel Hoke McCall was instrumental in organizing Fairview Methodist Protestant Church in 1906. He was very active in the work of this church. In 1919, the name of this church was changed from Fairview to Roberta Methodist Church. In 1953, the frame building was replaced with a nice brick sanctuary & is now the current Roberta United Methodist Church.

In addition to Hoke's church work, he held midweek prayer meetings in his neighborhood, reaching many people who did not attend church.
