Bettie Coffee (Holmes) Thomas was the daughter of Timothy A. Holmes and Mary Ann Elizabeth (Dotson) Holmes, born on 22 May 1855 in Jackson, Mississippi. Her parents divorced before 1860, and her mother married Medley Vawter Dale, who became Bettie's stepfather. They lived in Mississippi during the Civil War. She was a teacher while they lived there.

Bettie's family came to Texas before 1870. She married James Reubin Thomas, Jr. on 4 Feb 1871 in Burleson County, Texas. They had a family of eleven children, seven of which lived past infancy--Mary Lee, Harmon Roco, Leona, Nannie J, Mattie Lula "Dink", Bettie Conzetta, and Tommye Edwin. They lived in Clay, Texas, during their married life, while raising their family.

Her husband, Jim, died in 1905. He was buried in the Thomas Cemetery in Clay, Burleson County, Texas.

She moved to Slaton, Lubbock County, Texas, about 1920, where she lived with her daughter and husband, Tommye and Frank Matthes. She also lived in Somerville, Burleson County Texas, with her daughter, Leona Richards, in 1930. In 1940, she lived in Winters, Runnels County, Texas, where her daughter, Nannie Edwards, lived. She died on 25 Mar 1941 in Winters, Texas. She is buried in the Northview Cemetery in Winters.
