Nancy Malissa Duggan was the daughter of War of 1812 veteran Daniel Duggan, Jr. and Mary "Polly" McMahan, both descendants of Sevier County pioneers. She was born on her parents' farm in the Fair Garden area of Sevier County, the youngest of thirteen children.

In November of 1858, at age 17, Nancy married farmer James Lafayette Catlett. The couple lived on a farm very near Nancy's parents. Nancy and James had ten known children: William Richard, Sarah Caroline, Clercy Adeline, Nancy Louisa, George Lafayette, John Wilson, Lou Ann, Margaret Florence, James Bruce and Ellen Melissa.

Nancy was only 37 when she died in 1879. A year later James also died. Causes of death are unknown. Oldest son William Richard was 20 at the time and oldest daughter Sallie was 18, while baby Ellen was just a year old . All ten children stayed together on the farm, where they are found in the 1880 census. All survived to adulthood and most eventually married. We know of 42 grandchildren. Nancy is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, off Jones Cove Road in Sevier County.
