Obituary
Alexander Miller

In 1831, there came from Fleming county, Ky., and settled on the line of the "old Whitsel trace" leading from the settlements on Whitewater to the village of Marion, on Blue river, Shelby county, Indiana, Alexander Miller. In the dense forest he erected a cabin to which, in the same year, he brought his small family, and there they commenced the battled of life. In the fifty-nine years which have gone since that "day of small things," a very marked change has taken place. The small opening in the forest has developed into large, cultivated fields, and the small cabin into the beautiful, large, commodious family dwelling. Nine children (three sons and six daughters) were reared on the farm, of whom two sons and four daughters are living comfortable and happy in homes of their own. All are members of the church, in good standing and adorning their profession.

Father Miller was the last of the two surviving male members of the Rushville Presbyterian church who were there when the writer of these lines took charge as pastor, fifty-five years ago. Brother Miller never aspired to be great or do great things. Modest and retiring in life, but firm in his purposes, he was esteemed by the community. He loved the church with which he was connected, and was liberal in her support. In his general character two points were characteristic, as noted and understood in the community where he was best known – "he was an honest man," "he was a Christian man." The savor of his life is a heritage for his family and friends. He died on Saturday evening, June 28th, in the 89th year of his age. Have served his generation, like David, by the will of God "he fell on sleep, and was carried to his grave." Rev. G. A. Beattie, assisted by Revs. N. Kerrick and D.M. Stewart conducted the funeral services.
