He was born Jan 11, 1891 in St. Paul to Hans & Meri Johnson. As a small child he moved to Park Rapids where he was raised to manhood. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in December of 1917 and served his country during World War I. In 1919 he retired from the service and moved back to Park Rapids where he was united in marriage to Maybelle Schempp on Nov 29, 1918 in Austin. He lived and worked in and around the Park Rapids area as a carpenter contractor until his retirement in 1963, and he continued to live in Park Rapids until a short time before his death. He was a Charter Member of the American Legion, past Commander of the Park Rapids American Legion and was involved in the Minnesota Defense Force during World War II.
Survivors include one son, Norvel Johnson of Park Rapids; two daughters, Mrs. Bill (Joyce) Hober of Salem, OR, and Mrs. Marilyn Weeks of Fargo; one sister, Doris Hostetter of Davenport, Iowa; 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and one daughter-in-law, Corinne Brazel of Park Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sons, Bob and Wayne and one daughter, Lorraine Stein.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, May 9 at the Riverside United Methodist church in Park Rapids with the Rev. Duane Grage officiating. Mrs. Jane Wolff was the organist and Courtiney Brazel sang; "On Eagles Wings" and " The Lord's Prayer". Congregational Hymn was "How Great Thou Art".
Active pallbearers were Dale Johnson, Davis Konshok, Brian Johnson, David Johnson, Lloyd Stigman and Dave Konshok.
Military Rites were presented by the American Legion Otto Hendrickson Post 212. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery with the arrangements handled by the Jones-Behrens Funeral Home of Park Rapids.
