There is confusion about Mary's birthday. In the Allen family Bible, it is shown she was born November 2nd or 4th, 1847. Under a magnifying glass, it looks like 2nd was written on top. Mary was suppose to be a twin to her brother, John Reid Bates, which is shown as 2 November 1847.

She married John Thomas Allen, 1 December 1866, Hickman Co., Tennessee. They were the parents of 11 children: Roe, Ewell, Robert, Brown A., William L., John, Luther L., James, Oerie, Felix, and David Hershel Allen.
