Funeral services for J. Bassett Nitschke, 69, who died at his home Monday night following a brief illness, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday from St. Austin's chapel, where the requiem mass will be said.
Mr. Nitschke, for 20 years a member of the Austin city council and four years state inspector of masonry, is survived by hs widow, two sons, Lewis E. Nitschke and Hilliare F. Nitschke; three grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. George Isherwood of Austin; and several nieces and nephews.
Interment will be in Oakwood cemetery under the direction of the Thurlow B. Weed funeral home.
Mr. Nitschke, who was born in Travis county and made the county and Austin his home all his life, served as chairman of the street committee of the city countil, supervised paving of Congress avenue and was responsible for the installation of the city's original storm sewer system. During the Colquitt administration he served as the first state inspector of masonry.
He was president of Protection company No. 3, Austin volunteer firemen; grand knight of Austin lodge, Knights of Columbus; several times president of the brick-layers' union, and officer and member of the Sons of Hermann, Woodmen of the World, Fraternal Aid union and other organizations.
Mr. Nitschke has been retired from active affairs for the past several years.
