Marvin Coleman was only 6 years old when his father died. Six months later hismother married again and he was mostly raised by his step-father Perry Gilliland. He was ten years old when his older brother Willie died.
During Marvin's lifetime he was a teacher, a barber, and then by 1910 when he moved to Ft. Worth he had begun his lifetime career in the lumber business. Marvin married Ruby Ray in Rhome, Wise Co., TX. on 8 Sept 1907 when she was 19 years old. When their first child Lois was one month old, they moved from Bridgeport, TX to Ft. Worth, TX. They later had four more children, all boys: Ray, Eugene, Scott, andA.Marvin Jr. The family first lived in the Polytechnic area. Then they moved to Magnolia Ave. and finally Marvin built a two-story frame house on Wabash St.Later he built a brick house further north on Wabash. He served as Manager of Chickasaw Lumberyard for about 40 years. Marvin was a strict father and goodMethodist. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He and his wife played dominoes, and during his retirement he raised a large vegetable garden in the back of his home on Wabash St. in Ft. Worth. Following his wife's death, he continued to live on in his home for several years. Marvin went blind with glaucoma in his last few years of life, and later moved to a nursing home before he died.He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Ft. Worth.
