Sister of President Thomas Jefferson, born in Virginia 1752 died in Kentucky 1811 (date of death is wrong, should be 26 May 1810.)
There were three graves marked with fieldstones here. One smaller than the other two. The D.A.R. took down the rock markers in 1927 and erected the above monument to Lucy. Mr. Boynton Merrill in his book, JEFFERSON's NEPHEWS, published by Princeton University Press 1976, gives very convincing evidence that Lucy is probably buried two miles away in the graveyard above Birdsville. This 462 page book took ten years of research and is well documented.
Many of our local traditions about the Jefferson's stem from the account in Watt's CHRONICLES OF A KENTUCKY SETTLEMENT in which the author openly states not to consider the book a local history since he has rearranged incidents to make his story more interesting. Mr. Merrill's book straightens out much of this confusion.
The following three persons are probably the ones buried here on Rocky Hill.
Lewis, Elizabeth Jane (betsy) Woodson Lewis, wife of Lilburne, died 25 Apr 1809 age 27 yrs.
Lewis, Lilburne, born 1776 died 10 Apr 1812 son of Charles & Lucy Jefferson Lewis
Lewis, Robert, son of Lilburne & Elizabeth, died shortly before 16 May 1814 age 7 yrs.
Other members of Lucy's immediate family, in all likelihood, are buried on the farm of Randolph Lewis above Birdsville.

Lewis, Mary Howell Lewis, wife of Randolph, died (about Feb.) 1812 age 36 yrs.
