Donald B. Courtney, 85, of Fort Madison, IA, passed away on Friday, February 19, 2010 at 4:50 a.m. at the Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison, IA.

Donald was born June 13, 1924 in Dry Ridge, KY to Lester Martin and Cecil Moorehead Courtney. He served in the US Army during WWII and Korea.

He married Opal M. Becker Sallee on February 13, 1949 in Memphis, MO and was an Engineer on the Santa Fe Railroad for 40 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Rutledge, MO and was a past member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

Don was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He also raised and trained American Saddlebred Five Gated Horses for show. Don loved spending time with his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Don is survived by his wife, Opal Courtney of Fort Madison, IA; four Children, Darrell (Martha) Sallee of Ninety Six, SC, Mary Ellen (Michael) Paros of Pensacola, FL, Barbara (Van) Williamson of Pensacola, FL and Sandra Fraise of Fort Madison, IA; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and one sister, Eileen LeVan of Cincinnati, OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

The funeral service was held Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. John Simpson officiating. Burial was held in Pauline Cemetery in Rutledge, MO. A memorial has been established for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
