Mary was raised on the family farm in Mt. Sterling with her sisters and brothers, helping with the chores. The cows had to be milked and the cream made into the many pounds of butter they sold. In the summer time they canned fruit and stored vegetables for winter. Their leisure time was spent sewing carpet rags to make floor coverings. While growing up their religious training was never neglected and Mary faithfully attended her church meetings: Sunday School, night meetings, Primary and Mutual. Many songs and recitations were learned in the home.
