Mrs. Elizabeth Appel, a long time resident of Highland, Wabasha County, Minn., died at St. Elizabeth's hospital, Wabasha on Monday, February 23. She had been ill for a long time and her death followed paralytic stroke. The remains were taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. John McMillin of Theilman on Tuesday morning. Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph's Church, Theilman tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock and interment will be made in St. Peter & Paul's cemetery at Conception.
Mrs. Appel's maiden name was Elizabeth Hillenbrand and she was born at Bavaria, Germany February 2, 1843. She emigrated to this country in 1861 and for two years made her home with her sister, Mrs. Felix Reck at Wabasha. On May 26, 1863 she was married at Wabasha to Stephen Appel, the Rev. Fr. Tissot performing the ceremony. They took up their residence on a homestead in Highland where they continued to reside.
To this union eleven children were born, eight of whom survive. The surviving children are Mrs. John McMillin of Theilman; John A. of Plainview; William A. of San Francisco, Cal.; August M. and Edward of Metalim Falls, Washington; Frank J. of Highland; Mrs. 'Arthur B. Melzner and Miss Amanda Appel of Butte, Montana. The deceased are Stephen A., Mrs. Gordon Campbell and a boy, who died in infancy. She also leaves one brother, Jacob Hillenbrand of Houghton, Michigan and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Weingartner of Wabasha.
Mr. and Mrs. Appel were married fifty-one years and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1913. Mr. Appel died on May 6, 1914. Mrs. Appel was a good Christian woman, her chief aim being to do the duties of her station in life faithfully and well. She was deeply devoted to her home and family, she was a kind friend and neighbor. She, with her husband were among the pioneers of the county and endured the many trials and hardships of the early days and made the most of life for herself and family. Her memory will live in the hearts of all who knew her and be an inspiration for them for higher and nobler things.
