The seventh of nine children, Benjamin was born on February 24, 1840 in Crawford County, Ohio to tailor Jacob S. Steiner and his wife Elizabeth. Benjamin's two oldest siblings were born in Pennsylvania, while he and the younger siblings were born in Ohio. Benjamin married Emily Struble (1838-1875), daughter of a cabinet maker, on September 12, 1861 in Hancock, Ohio. Their first child, John Quincy Steiner, was born the following year.

During the Civil War, Benjamin was mustered into service as a private in Company L of the 10th Ohio Cavalry on January 15, 1863, at age 23 and mustered out on July 24, 1865. He and wife Emily then settled in Crawford County, Ohio to farm and raise their growing family. Their second son Albertis was born on July 6, 1867 and third son, Erland D. Steiner, was born on November 16, 1874. Emily died on January 17, 1875.

On April 3, 1878, Benjamin married widow Margaret Jennie Cordell Hilborn (1847-1936), and they formed a blended family with her children. By 1880, he was a brick and tile maker. By 1900, he was again farming, with his wife and youngest step-child at home. In 1910, he and Margaret Jennie were alone in the household, and he was working as a day laborer doing odd jobs. After Benjamin died of bronchitis in Crawford County, Ohio on April 2, 1924, at the age of 84, Margaret Jennie filed to receive his military pension until her death on August 23, 1936.
