McCARTER, HARMON - age 76, passed away Friday May 24, 2002 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on May 15th. He was born October 21, 1925 in the Sugarlands section of what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and grew up in Gatlinburg. At age 17 he joined the Navy and served in the Pacific Theater for 3 years. Upon his return, he completed high school and then attended and graduated from the University of Tennessee. He became a CPA and worked first in Public Accounting and later as the Treasurer of Blue Diamond Coal Company until his retirement in 1991. After retirement he became an avid hiker and devoted friend of the Smokies. He was a member of Meridian Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by parents, Curtis and Pearl McCarter; daughter, Jennifer Lynn McCarter; and siblings, Elder, Fred, R.L. and Irene McCarter. Survivors: wife of 51 years, Aileen Robeson McCarter; children, Dianne (John) Kerr, Barry (Debbie) McCarter, Knoxville, Jeff (Rachel) McCarter of Johnson City; grandchildren, Jonathan, Robby and Jennifer Kerr, Ryan, Curt, Kristin, Jacob, and Caroline McCarter; siblings, Edna (Carl) Headrick, Marvin (Gerri) McCarter, Freda (Clayton) Watson, June (Al) Ogden, Joel McCarter; sister in law, Joyce McCarter; sister in law and husband, Ruth and Henry Parton; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Atchley's Funeral Home in Sevierville with funeral service to follow. Family and friends will gather at Mattox Cemetery in Wears Valley at 10 a.m. Monday for graveside service and interment. Rev. Dana Fachman officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Meridian Baptist Church, 6513 Chapman Hwy. Knoxville, Tenn. 37920.
