..A shadow of sadness was cast over the entire community Easter Sunday by an accident at the T.H. Markle ranch about sixteen miles southeast of Glasgow, when little ten year old Walter Markle was crushed so badly that he succumbed at the Deaconess hospital the same evening. The accident occurred when a truck loaded with grain started away from The granary, but the motor being cool, the engine died and the truck, which was on a slight incline, settled back against the building, catching Walter between the end gate and the wall badly crushing him about the head. The first intimation of the accident was given when the younger brother, who was playing inside the granary called out that Walter was hurt.
..The boy was immediately rushed into town and an emergency operation was performed, from which he rallied for a short time, but passed away in the arms of his mother about 9:30 o'clock. Despite the terrible injuries the little fellow was conscious and cheerful to the last, and while he seemed to realize that he was perhaps fatally injured, took it philosophically and without complaint.
..Funeral services were held in the Baptist church Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. Chas. Gray Miller, pastor of the Congregational church officiating. The chancel rail was banked with flowers, offerings from a host of friends; a floral piece done to represent a broken wheel which was presented by the fifth grade of the South Side school, of which Walter was a member was especially beautiful and symbolic.
..Five of his little classmates acted as flower bearers and Kermit Birmingham,Earl Rudberg, Tom Herring and Claude Hague were the selected pall bearers.
..As a token of their love for Walter, members of the South Side school fifth grade attended the services enmasse and many of the pupils of the third grade of which Orval, a brother of Walter, is a member, attended as a mark of sympathy.
..Three very beautiful and appropriate selections were sung by a mixed quartet and in a few well chosen words Rev. Miller pointed the grief-stricken ones to the great creator for courage and comfort in their hour of sorrow.
..Interment was made in the Highland cemetery, a long line of cars forming the funeral procession.
..Walter Emmette Markle was born in this city of April 30, 1914 and the crowd which packed the church auditorium and extended far out into the street, during the funeral services was a marked evidence of how much he had endeared himself in the hearts of the residents of his home community in the few short years he was permitted to live. He was a bright, dear, manly little fellow and will be greatly missed by his school mates, and his associates in the Sunday school class of the Baptist church of which he had bee a member of seven years.
..As the oldest brother of the family, Walter was an ideal pal and protector to is younger brothers and just how much his parents will miss him can only be fully realized by other parents of the community who extend their heartfelt sympathy at this time.
..Walter is survived by his parents, three brothers, Orval, Darwin and Robert; an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Walker of this city; an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce, also of this city; a grandmother, Mrs. George Woods of California, and an uncle and aunt in both Seattle, Wash., and Nekoma, N.D.
