On the night of May 1, 1865, C.S.A. President Jefferson Davis while on his flight south after the fall of Richmond, spent the night at the home of Ann's mother, Mary Porter Gary. Ann's husband, Brig. Gen. Nathan Evans and brother Major Gen. Martin Gary were part of Davis' escort into South Carolina, along with General's Braxton Bragg, Wade Hampton, and Secretary of War John Breckenridge. Ann no doubt helped her mother feed and entertain the presidential party during their one night stay in Cokesbury.
