Edith was born Sept. 24, 1897, to Norman B. and Etta L. (Green) Streeter in rural Custer County. She attended country schools in Buffalo Gap and Custer. She was a member of Custer Congregational Church.
On Sept. 21, 1920, she was united in marriage to Loyd Thurston. To this union, three children were born: Myra, Ira and Betty Jean.
Edith was always interested in civic affairs. She voted the first time women were allowed to vote in South Dakota. From that time on, she was always interested in elections. She served on election boards for more than 60 years. During World War II, she served as substitute rural mail carrier, served on the Red Cross board, the cemetery board, draft board, Easter Seals board and tire rationing board. She had also worked on the county highway.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father, five sisters, five brothers, husband, son, two daughters and several nieces and nephews.
Grateful for having the opportunity and privilege to share her life are many grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at McColley's Chapel in Hot Springs. Services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the chapel, with Pastor Mark Crossman officiating. Burial will be at Buffalo Gap Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established to benefit the cemetery.
