Journalist and Author. Spent his youth in Saint Lawrence County New York, which became the central location for many of his novels. Moved to New York City after graduating from Saint Lawrence University and founded the first modern newspaper syndicate in the United States in 1885. Began writing novels in 1892 and gave up his position as Sunday editor of the New York World to dedicate his time to writing fiction. His novel "Eben Holden" was the fourth best selling novel of 1904 and the fifth best selling of 1905. Other books that were in the top ten bestselling books of their year included "D'ri and I", "The Light in the Clearing", and "A Man for the Ages". In 1990 his last book, "Lost in the Fog" was published from a previously unpublished manuscript.
