Doris Stalnaker, age 91, of Florida Presbyterian Homes in Lakeland passed away on Friday, November 1, 2013 of natural causes. She was born to Fred and Ada Akard in Seffner and lived there most of her life. After graduating from Plant City High School, she went to the University of Tampa where she met Zeno Stalnaker. They were married in 1943. Doris was an elementary school teacher, supervisor, and directed county-wide programs for slow learners. Later she had her own school in Seffner for diagnostic and remedial work with children who had learning difficulties. She had a Master's Degree in Special Education. She was a charter member of The Presbyterian Church of Seffner, an ordained elder, and served in many offices in her local church, The Presbytery, and was a commissioner to General Assembly. Doris and Zeno moved to Florida Presbyterian Homes in 1986 and continued to serve in numerous volunteer positions as long as they were able. Zeno died in 2005. Doris is survived by her sister, Gene Ledford, of Florida Presbyterian Homes and a cousin Dorothy Melton of Chuckey, TN. A memorial service will be held in The Chapel of Florida Presbyterian Homes at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Loving Care Friend of Florida Presbyterian Homes or The Presbyterian Church of Seffner. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.heathfuneralchapel.com.
