William Leetsch Dies At Age 92
Funeral services for William Leetsch, a pioneer resident of the Rosemont-Blue Hill community, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church in Blue Hill. A prayer service at the Merten-Butler Funeral Chapel preceded the service at the church. Student Pastor Gordon Heiberg was in charge. Alan Woods sang "Mansion Over the Hilltop" and "No Cares in Heaven." He was accompanied by Mrs. Frank Kamm at the organ. Burial was in Oak Creek cemetery (sic) six miles east of Blue Hill with the pallbearers being grandsons of the deceased: Lavern Woods, Delbert Hartman and Jack Shidler, all of Hastings; Harold Woods of Imperial, Earl Woods of Wauneta, and Max Harrington of Arthur.
William H. Leetsch, the son of William and Mary Leetsch, was born December 4, 1864, at Hartford, Connecticut. He departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elva Woods, in Blue Hill on January 4, 1957, at the age of 92 years and 29 days. He had been seriously ill only five days.
At the age of six weeks he came with his pioneer parents as far west as Erie, Pennsylvania, and a little later to Davenport, Iowa. They came to Nebraska in 1871 and homesteaded in Oak Creek precinct on what is now the Cornelius farm two miles north of Rosemont.
On January 1, 1894, he was united in marriage with Sarah Jane Nelson. twelve children To this union twelve children were born. He was preceded in death by his wife on March 14, 1937, and four children.
Mr. Leetsch was one of our oldest citizens. He came here with his parents while the country was still being settled. For many years he farmed. Later he operated the Farmers Union general store in Rosemont and more recently owned and operated a store of his own in that village. Following their retirement in 1929 Mr. and Mrs. Leetsch built and occupied a residence property on the west ledge of Blue Hill where they lived until her death. After that Mr. Leetsch lived with his children.
Mr. Leetsch is survived by eight children: Mrs. Elva Woods of Blue Hill, Mrs. Emma Harting of Appleton, Mo., Mrs. Edith Woods of Imperial, Mrs. Bernice Maruska of Blue Hill, Mrs. Mabel Mapes of Ashland, Oregon, Mrs. Vera Harrington of Ogallala, Lloyd of Blue Hill and Don of Hastings. Mr. Leetsch also had 50 grandchildren and 74 great-grandchildren.
