Born December 5, 1953 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was affectionately known as "Uncle Don" to all who loved him. Don is survived by his parents, John and Elizabeth Kearney of Hamden, and five siblings: Tom Kearney of Seattle, Bob Kearney of Houston, Nancy Hora of Chattanooga, Mary Clough of Hamden and Joan Winterfield of Colorado Springs. He also leaves behind nine nieces and nephews. Don was a 1972 graduate of Hamden High School, where he enjoyed chess club and ran cross-country.
He received a BA in accounting from Bentley College and an MBA from Babson College. He continued to live near Boston, working as an accountant in the medical industry before heading to Los Angeles in the early 80s. There he worked for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the LA Free Clinic for over 10 years.
In 1995 Don relocated to Colorado, and since 2002 has worked for the state as an accountant in the Child Welfare Program of the Department of Human Resources. Don was a lifelong sports fan for many teams in the cities where he lived. Most recently he enjoyed the Colorado Rockies recent run at the World Series.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends for his gentle and kind nature and the inspiration he provided to all during his courageous battle.
A memorial service and burial were held this summer in Hamden. Gifts in Don's memory can be sent to the Lewis Melanoma Research Fund (payable to the CU Foundation) P.O. Box 6511, MS8117 Aurora, CO 80045.
