Minor John Stierwalt, 94, of Gosport passed away August 30, 2011 at the Owen Valley Health Campus in Spencer.

He was born January 2, 1917 just north of Gosport to William R. and Mabel (Krammes) Stierwalt. He was a graduate of Gosport High School and Indiana Business College in Indianapolis with a degree in accounting. Minor John married Marion F. Neilson on May 11, 1940 and they moved to Gosport in 1943 when Minor John began farming. They became members of the Gosport Christian Church and served the church for 69 years. After completing college, he worked at International Harvester for 6 ½ years before he landed a job at Allison Corporation inspecting aircraft engines. In 1943 the government requested those with farming experience return to the farm and raise food for the war effort. He returned to the farm and farmed in Owen County until he retired in 1981. With his passion for soil preservation, he helped to organize the Owen County Soil Conservation Service in 1946 where he served as district supervisor until 1955. In 1953 he was elected to the Morgan County Rural Electric Membership Corporation (REMC) Board of Directors, a position he held for 31 years, 27 years as chairman of the board. In addition he served 30 years on the REMC State Board of Directors and served on the executive board. From 1970 to 1984, he served on the National Rural Electric Board in Washington, D.C. When Sweet Owen Industries was established, he was among the organizers and served on the board of directors for 5 years. Minor John's service in the community continued with the Association of Retarded Citizens, the Area 10 Advisory Committee, Parade Chairman for the Gosport Lazy Days Festival, the Gosport Christian Church Board serving as a deacon and elder, and a 73 year member of the Masons and Scottish Rite for 25 years. After retirement from farming he continued working the soil by growing vegetables and sharing them with the widows and elderly families in the Gosport and Spencer area.

Minor John is survived by his son, Thomas R. Stierwalt and his wife C. Joan; daughter, Rita Ann Stierwalt; grandchildren, Lisa Taylor and husband John, Ericka L. Utterback and husband Eric, and Jeremy T. Stierwalt; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Kaelen Taylor and Allison, Emma, and Elli Utterback and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
