James Madison Field lived in Cherokee Co. , Ga. where along with Larkin Nix, when he paid surety bond for an orphan, Daniel J. Foster, son of Philemon Foster, April 10, 1854.
He then settled in Gordon County along the Coosawattie River, in an area known later as Field's Ferry. (There is a golf course there today) There was also a Field's Mill and Ferry on the River in Gordon County. [You may view a Field's Mill and Ferry historical marker and the mill remains here.
The Historical Marker reads: "Georgia, 1776 - Field's Mill & Ferry -- May 16, 1864, Butterfield's (3d) div., 20th A.C. instead of crossing at McClure's Ferry, 2 mi. downstream, sought to gain time by moving to Field's - - reaching here 11 P.M. Not until noon of the 17th was it across. Schofield, prevented from crossing his corps (23d) at McClure's, moved the 1st and 2d divs. To Field's, arriving here early the 17th-as did Cox's (3d) div., which had marched via Tilton & Holley. With Butterfield at Field's Schofield's A.C. (the left wing of Sherman's advance from Resacal, was held up 24 hrs. because of the erratic moves of the 20th Corps. Georgia Historical Commission 1959."
James Madison Field and Margaret Lewis were the parents of ten children, two daughters and eight sons. Margaret Lewis Field passed away June 20, 1862. She is buried in the Old Field Family Cemetery (L. P. Owens Farm Cemetery) located on the hill above her home in Calhoun, Gordon Co., Georgia.
James remarried May 11, 1865 in Floyd Co., Georgia. He married Margaret Ann "Maggie" Hamilton. This Margaret was the daughter William T. Hamilton and Rachel Carline Holden. She was also the grandniece of James's first wife, Margaret H. Lewis. They were the parents of eleven children, three daughters and eight sons.
James passed away March 11, 1888 in Adairsville, Floyd Co., Georgia. He is buried in the Salmon Cemetery, Shannon, GA.
