Elting T. Deyo died at his home in this village on Sunday afternoon after a long illness in the 77th year of his age. For a period of 40 years Mr. Deyo had been one of the best known men in New Paltz. Over half a century ago, when a young man, at his home in the Middletown neighborhood he learned the carpenter's trade with Tobias Elting. In a few years he was, himself, a boss carpenter with a number of men in his employ. For quite a term of years most of the buildings put up in this town were erected by Mr. Deyo.
In 1868 he married Cornelia Elting. A few years afterwards he built the residence in this village where they ever afterwards resided. At about this time he quit the carpenter business and afterwards devoted his attention to farming and fruit growing and likewise carried on the undertaking business. He took great interest in public enterprises of all kinds, was for a long time one of the village trustees and was always ready to contribute his share or more than his share, both in money and labor. He was for a long time an officer in the Reformed church and as such was faithful and efficient. He was known as a very strong temperance man at all times and under all circumstances.
The funeral was held at the Reformed church on Wednesday.
