On 27 Feb 1874 John J Kinney was appointed Special County Judge by Governor Dix, replacing Judge A Hazeltine who no longer wanted the position. On 30 Oct 1874 as the Democratic candidate for judge, he responed to a Republican sally that he should step down, he replies that he is Episcopalian and should not fall from grace and expects to win the election. He has a droll sense of humor. Two weeks later, there is a spoof in the Jamestown Journal about him being too old for the position. John answered he was 92 last Oct and if he had known folks over 90 were ineligible he wouldn't have been a candidate. 5 Nov 1875 a note in the paper states Mr and Mrs John J Kinney had returned on the 4th from their wedding trip. He is listed in the 1879 Jamestown Directory. 1890 John J Kinney was special county judge for Monroe Co., NY.
