The history of the tree: The Pemberton Oak was the landmark used by the Militia under Capt. Pemberton's command as a muster site. After meeting at this tree, Captain Pemberton's contingent traveled on to meet those troops led by Colonels Sevier, Campbell, and Shelby at Sycamore Shoals (September 25, 1780). These "Over the Mountain Men" joined other contingents as they marched to South Carolina where they met and vanquished Patrick Ferguson who had issued a foolhardy threat to them.
