Charles Nelson Wallace was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Son of Lavinder Aloysius Wallace and Margarette Lois McGuire Wallace;

Step-Son of Mary Ellen Dunn Wallace;

Brother of Lavinder Aloysius Wallace, Jr., Margarette "Marg" Wallace, William Armstrong Wallace, Hugh McGuire Wallace, George Thomas Wallace and Francis Xavier "Frank" Wallace.

Grandson of William Armstrong Wallace and Mary Agnes "Minnie" Hobson Wallace and Hugh Emmett McGuire and Margaret Rodgers McGuire.

Charles Wallace's mother, Margarette McGuire Wallace, died when Charles was only 4 years old; his father then moved the family back to Lynchburg, Virginia, where they all lived with his Wallace Grandmother Minnie; later they would live with their father, Lavinder, and Step-Mother Mary Ellen Dunn Wallace and grandmother Minnie.

Charles Nelson Wallace enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on January 24th, 1943 in Richmond, Virginia.

Charles was with the 389th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force, when he was a member of an important mission.... during that mission, his plane crashed and he was captured; he was held as a Prisoner of War from August 1943 to 1944. At that time Charles was a 1st Lieutenant ... he was promoted to Captain upon his release.
MEDALS RECEIVED: THE DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS, THE AIRMAN'S MEDAL, THE PURPLE HEART.

"The Ploesti Raid on August 1, 1943 is better known as "Operation Tidal Wave", the low level attack by B-24 Liberators against the Ploesti oil fields in Rumania. The B-24s launched from bases in North Africa. The 44th, 93rd, 389th bomb groups came from the 8th Air Force, and the 98th and the 367th from 9th Air Force were combined to create the mission force. 1,173 men in the 179 bombers went on the raid and 308 were KIA, 208 POWs or interned. 10 Aircraft were shot down by Rumanian Bf 109s or IAR 80 fighters, 7 by Luftwaffe aircraft and the rest by flak."

Charles Wallace was married to Shirley Marion Culbertson Wallace and resided in Midland, Texas. He worked in the home construction business for most of his civilian career.

Charles and Shirley are the parents of two daughters and four sons, 2 of whom are deceased.

Charles died at the age of 74 in Midland, Texas. He is buried beside his wife, Shirley, in Fairview Cemetery in Midland, Texas.
