Christopher James Sumner, 57[58], 173-1st ave., vice president and general manager of Western Loan and Building Co., died Tuesday night in San Francisco of a heart ailment.
Accomplanied by his wife, Mr. Sumner was on a routine business trip inspecting offices and properties at the time of his death.
Son of James and Elizabeth [Whiteside] Sumner, he was born May 14, 1891[0], in Preston, [Lancashire] England. He came to the United States with his parents and settled in Provo. There attended public schools and Brigham Young University.
Mr. Sumner engaged in the mercantile, banking and other business of Richfield, Since 1934, when Western Loan and Building Co. was reorganized, he had served as vice president and general manager.
An active Mason, he was a member of Hiram lodge No. 12, F & A M Richfield, Utah consistory, a thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason, and belonged to El Kaiah temple. Mystic shrine.
He was a member of the Alta Club. Mr. Sumner was a veteran of World War I.
Married Elithe Peterson in December 1913, in Farmington.
Surviving widow, a son, Scharf S. Sumner, Salt Lake City, two brothers, Thomas Sumner, New York, and James Sumner, Provo; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Sumner Steele, Salt Lake City; three grandchildren, Suzanne, Patrick McCarthy and Christopher James Sumner II.
