Fred Richard Matthes was born in a log cabin on March 28, 1862, in New Frankfort, Saline Co., Missouri, to Fredrick Ferdinand and Augusta (Wolford) Matthes. He married Bertha Charlotte Suppe on June 20, 1889 in New Frankfort, Saline Co., Missouri. He owned a general store and a ferry, which he operated. His store housed the post office, of which he was the Post Master. Six of their nine children were born in New Frankfort, Saline Co., Missouri before his family moved to Texas, where they lived in Wharton Co., Jackson Co., and Matagorda Co. and made his living as a farmer. He died at the age of 71 on January 20, 1933, in Ganado, Jackson Co., Texas, and was buried in the Palacios Cemetery, Matagorda Co., Texas.

His headstone shows 1863 as the birth year, but his death certificate, obit, and family notes show 1862.
