Walter was the son of Josiah Henry Eardley, Jr. and Annie Widdop. He married first Regetta Maryette Walker in 2 February 1926 in Ogden, Weber, Utah. They were the parents of Vonda E. Platts, Darius W. Eardley and Lois E. Gardner. Regetta died in 1932. Walter then married Emma Leora Gross on 6 June 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were the parents of Zoanne E. Near.
