Mary and her husband began life together in a humble cottage. They were thrifty and built up their land, stock and wealth. Mary died from small-pox at their home near Ashburn.

Gen. John C Breckenridge spent the night at their home on the eve of the capture of Pres. of the Confederate States, Jeff Davis and his wife. The Gen. was able to escape and returned to KY after the war.
