Enlisted on April 21, 1832 3rd regiment, Whiteside's Brigade Mounted Volunteer's Illinois. During the Black Hawk War (5-13-1832 to 8-2-1832).

Married Sarah Ann Blizzard on 15 Jul 1834 in St. Charles Co., Missouri. To their union were born, Louisa Jane, Maria Elizabeth, Gilbert Lafayette, Nathan Columbus, William Albert, George Dallas, Cyrus Alonzo and Sarah Catherine Potts.

Sarah Ann died in 1848 and his second marriage was to Mary Ann Clark on July 1, 1851 in Christian Co., Illinois, she died in 1878.
Joel's third marriage was to Ruth Clark Myers on October 20, 1881 in Christian Co., Illinois.
There were no children issued of his second and third marriages.

Joel was a pedestinarian (hardshell) Baptist, he was a founding member of the Walnut Hill Universalist Church, in politics he was a jacksonian democrat.
