McHENRY – Helen Kathryn (Bauer) Mauch, 90, of McHenry, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry.
She was born June 30, 1914, in McHenry, to Michael and Mary (Tonyan) Bauer. On June 14, 1944, she married Norbert B. Mauch when he was home on a furlough from World War II.
She received a teaching certificate at Northern Illinois University. Her first teaching assignment, in 1935, was teaching all eight grades in one room at Fort Hill School in Lake County. She also taught in a one-room school in Volo in 1947, and several grades in Grayslake. After taking time off to raise her family in the 1950s, she finished her teaching career in 1972, after 25 years at Hilltop and Landmark schools in McHenry District 15.
She was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters; Retired Teachers Association, Christian Mothers and the Professional Business Women's Association.
She enjoyed playing bridge and watching sports. She especially enjoyed baking cookies with her grandchildren.
Survivors include three sons, Rodney Mauch of Griffith, Ind., Robert (Mary) Mauch of McHenry and Randy (Diane) Mauch of McHenry; seven grandchildren, Mike (Wendy) Mauch of Florida, Scott (Shelly) Mauch of Indiana, Nicholas, Benjamin, Rebecca, Jeremy, and James Mauch, all of McHenry; a great-grandchild, Addison Rose Mauch; and her caretaker, Mela.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 2, 1988; two brothers, Ben (Katie) Bauer and Joseph (Helen) Bauer; four sisters, Frances Bauer, Martha (George) Freund, Dorothy (Matt) Adams and Carolyn Bauer; and three children, William, Catherine and Maria Florentine, all in childhood.
The visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at George R. Justen & Son Funeral Home, 3519 W. Elm St., McHenry. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at St. Mary's Church, 1401 N. Richmond Road, McHenry.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
