His name is William Jakob Bonnet (originally Wilhelm Jakob). According to church records he was born 28 Oct 1847 in Texas. I know the tombstone says 1838.
Like many hill country Germans, they were Union supporters. He and his brothers fled Texas in 1861. However, one brother (Peter) was shot by Confederates while crossing the Rio Grande and later died of his wounds. Wilhelm and Johann Carl (Charles) stayed behind in Mexico to look after Peter. Heinrich Daniel went on to New Orleans where he joined the Union army. Charles also later joined the same Union company. Another man wounded in the Rio Grande was Sylvester Kleck, he survived his wounds. Wilhelm Jakob later married Sylvester's youngest sister, Franciska Helen Kleck.
