SAD OCCURENCE

Resulting in the Death of Mr Isaac Smith, a Venerable Farmer of Elkhart Township

On Thursday, February 24th, Isaac Smith and wife, of Elkhart township, having come to Ligonier as usual to do some necessary trading for their family, met with a serious accident which resulted in the death of the former; his wife merely escaping and it is marvelous indeed that both were not killed instantly.

Having attended to necessary business, Mr Smith and wife started home. On entering the upper (covered) bridge the horse became frightened and, backing squarely around, precipitated Mr Smith and wife, the buggy, and itself over the embankment, a distance of about eight feet. No one witnessed the accident; and, being done so quickly, it would be impossible to give a description of the accident more minutely than as above. But a moment later Mr Fred Waite, (Whom we wish ever to remember), happened to look through his window, and seeing the animal [print unreadable] with the buggy, ran to the awful scene; and there, to his utter amazement, found Mr Smith and wife lying in a helpless condition. Others were summoned to aid in getting them into the home of Mr (unreadable) . Dr (unreadable) called (unreadable)...serious obstruction to the lungs, he being more seriously hurt than Mrs Smith. All done their utmost to alleviate his sufferings. His two sons, one chancing to be in town at the time, and the other teaching school not far distant, were promptly summoned to his side. After being made comfortable as possible, circulation and full pulse were indicative of reaction. This lasted a few hours, when it was noticed that the pulse was not full, and he was failing; the doctor said there was no probability of his recovery. His daughter was then sent for, and came only to find her father in a dying condition. When told by the doctor that recovery was doubtful, Mr Smith said, "All's well." When asked if he had a request to make, he said, "All is fixed." From this time on, until death relieved his sufferings, on Friday night last, at twenty-five minutes past nine o'clock, he was watched by his wife, children and many others, who showed very great kindness. His funeral took place at the Disciple Church on Saturday last at one o'clock. Elder Thomas, of Albion, assisted by Elder Groves, of Ligonier, delivered a very impressive sermon. From thence the remains were borne to the cemetery, and deposited in the grave, there to await Christ's summons: "Come forth." Peace be with him.

The wife of the deceased was able to attend the funeral, and at this writing is hopefully comfortable. There being no bones broken nor vital parts injured, the probabilities are that she will speedily recover.

Isaac Smith was born in Shenandoah county, Virginia, July 5, 1801, being at the time of his death 74 years 7 months and 19 days of age. He emigrated with his father (his mother having died when he was yet a small child) at the age of ten years to Licking county, Ohio. His father buying a large tract of land in Licking and the adjoining county of Muskingum, he was early put to hard work, and consequently had not the advantages of an education, but could calculate and transact business readily. He remembered the war of 1812, two of his older brothers being engaged therein. In 1819 he became a member of the Old School Baptist Church, in which he lived a consistent member until his death, and, as has been frequently remarked, was a "pillar and a post in the organization." The first vote he cast was for General Jackson, and, firmly believing in the Jacksonian doctrine, supported him by his vote twice afterward. In politics he was a steadfast Democrat, having never voted anything but the democratic ticket. In the year 1864 he removed to Noble county with his wife and three children, leaving one son and a daughter in Ohio; obits courtesy of Pat O'Dell (#47147856)
