Mr. Earl Ponder, age 95 of Mt. Vernon, died Sunday, Sep. 13, 2009 at the Rockcastle Regional Hospital. He was born in Rockcastle County on Aug. 3, 1914 the son of Jake and Verna Bullock Ponder. He was a retired coal miner and school bus driver, was a member of the Livingston Pentecostal Church, and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was a World War II Army veteran having received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart medals for his service.
He is survived by two stepsons, Walter "Chick" Sturgill of Livingston and George Sturgill (Lela) of Shepherdsville. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie (Arnold) Ponder; three stepsons; 6 brothers; and 5 sisters.
