Cynthia Ann Unruh, 68, of Vancouver, WA, died September 12, 2009. Cynthia was born on April 16, 1941 in Lacrosse, Wisconsin the third of five children to Ray and Julia Sampson. She attended Wisconsin State University at La Crosse where she graduated in 1963 with a BS degree in Education.
In 1966 she was accepted into the Navy Woman's Officer Program and graduated from Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. While stationed in Pensacola, Florida in 1967 she met and married her husband Don, who was also in the Navy.
Upon completion of their Navy commitment Cynthia and Don moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin where their two sons, were born. The family moved to Erie, Pennsylvania in 1975 where Cynthia obtained a Master of Education Degree as a Reading Specialist from Edinboro State University. She was very active in her community and Church as a volunteer, and was a co-sponsor of a refugee family from Cambodia while in Erie.
Cynthia and her family moved to Vancouver in 1986 where she became a substitute teacher in the Evergreen School District. She continued her church and community involvement and particularly enjoyed many activities at Trinity Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her husband, Don; sons, Jim (Mary) and Jon (Dawn); sisters, Sally (Mark) Dressel, Mary Olson, June (Mike) Patrick; brother, John (Gloria) Sampson; and six grandchildren.
Her parents preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 309 W. 39th Street, Vancouver, WA, Friday, September 18, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. Visitation will be held at Vancouver Funeral Chapel, 110 E. 12th Street on Thursday, September 17, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m.. Interment with military honors will follow services at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Oregon.
