Rev. Ivar Sandberg, pioneer pastor, dies

The Rev. Ivar K. Sandberg, pioneer pastor of Grant County, died Wednesday at his home in Barrett at the age of 91. Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, Barrett, with the Rev. Arthur Wickstrom officiating. Burial will be in Our Savior's Cemetery, Barrett.

He was born in Bodo, Norway, July 22, 1882. At the age of 17 he emigrated to Minnesota and attended the farm school at the University. He mastered the art of buttermaking, enabling him to work his way through Luther College graduating in 1911. He then attended Luther Theological Seminary, graduating in 1914. He was then installed as pastor of Lien, Lincoln and Our Savior's Congregations in the Barrett area, serving for 47 years. He served as both president and secretary of the Glenwood Circuit and vice
president of the Northern Minnesota Pastoral Association. The Rev. Sandberg served on the local school board for 12 years and most recently had been interim pastor at Eden Reformed Church in Herman. He was included in the centennial edition of Who's Who in Minnesota.

He married Marion Berrum Oct. 4, 1917, at Holman, Wis. She died in 1971.

Surviving are five children, Mrs. Orrin (Anne) Anderson, Westby, Wis.; Mrs. Leo (Dorothea) Riggins, Afton, Wis.; Gerhard, Corpus Christi, Tex.; John, Barrett; and Paul, Slayton; and 15 grandchildren.

According to birth and baptismal records, Ivar was born as "Over Sandberg Pederson". When he was naturalized, he had his name changed to " Ivar Kruger Sandberg".

According to Church Regestery in Norway, Ivar was known as Iver Sandberg Antonsen. He came to America on May 30, 1900 on the ship named Salmo Bill. He was Naturalized on April 20, 1909 in Decorah, Iowa.
