John Walter Bowyer, 88, Rt. 4, died Jan. 22, 1980, at St. Joseph Hospital, Kokomo.

Born in Cass County Jan. 29, 1891, he was the son of Charles and Margaret Layton Bowyer. He married Cecile Metzger in 1920 and she died in 1945. He then married Naomi Metzger Miller in 1947 and she survives.

He had lived here since 1930, coming from Cass County, where he was sheriff from 1921 to 1925. He was a retired farmer and a member of the American Legion, Logansport. A veteran of World War I, he received the Purple Heart.

Surviving are two daughters, Rosemary, wife of Richard Rhodes, and Marie Roberts, both of Peru; one son, John Walter Bowyer Jr., Glendale, Mo.; two sisters, Dorris Layman, Walton, and Inez Fouts, Chandler, Ariz.; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Seven brothers and one sister are deceased.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Metzger Cemetery, Miami County. Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
