John Burdick Stone was the second son of Ward N. Stone and Mary E. Ackert Ascha Stone, farmers in Peru, Berkshire County, Mass. He was the brother of Edwin Bosworth Stone and Walter Lincoln Stone, and the half-brother of Charles G. Ascha, William Henry Ascha (aka Orlando William Palmer), Elva/Eveline A. Ascha, Joseph Turner Stone, and Elizabeth Harriet Stone MacDuff Easterbrooks.

He was a farmer and laborer who owned approximately 250 acres of land in the area where Cummington, Worthington, and Peru join boundaries. On 23 February 1898 he married Jennie L. Reed of Cummington; they had one surviving child, Ruth A. Stone Reed Nevins, later of Springfield, Massachusetts. (Another daughter, Gladys Mildred Stone, was born 7 September 1902, but died before 1910.) Jennie was granted a divorce from John (on grounds of intoxication, physical abuse, and non-support) and custody of the children on 15 December 1902. John lost his land the following year when it was sold at sheriff's auctions to his former wife in payment of $400 court-ordered alimony. "Bert" thereafter lived in Worthington, working at odd jobs until his death. His ex-wife moved away and sold off the land on 11 May 1910.
