Joseph was the son of John Jacob & Susannah Milhouse Bowman. In 1806, he married Mary Anne Hoss.

They were the parents of Susannah (Crouch), John Hoss, Jacob and Elizabeth (Bashor).

After Mary's death, Joseph married Christine Beahm on 2 January 1820. They were the parents of Mary (Garst), Daniel Beahm, Catherine (Laire), Sarah (Clark), David, and Joseph.
